There are some photos of our discovering. A huge thank you to Joseph for taking the photos.

We just got a letter!

Last week Room 8 had a delivery!

We got a letter.

The letter came to us all the way from Vanuatu. The letter asked us what we had been doing and what we were going to be sending over.

The children were very excited when we got a letter that they decided that we needed to write back!
We also decided that since they don't have many books now that we need to create some of our own and send them too!

It is going to get very busy in Room 8... watch this space.

Keeping ourselves safe

We have started this unit in Room 8 called Keeping Ourselves Safe.

The unit has taught us so far about:
Our bodies,
Feelings,
Touch and
Where to go for help!

One thing we have learnt is that not everyone knows their phone number or address. So this is our challenge by the end of term to learn!

Here is some of the work we have done so far:

Newsletter

Hi all,

Here is this weeks newsletter (week 5)..

We are nearly half way through the term.

This week we are off to Duart house again so remember to be ready to read on Friday!

Vanuatu!

A quick update on our efforts to send over goods to Vanuatu.

The children raised a total of $510.00 in the mufti day!

Wow! They now begin the hard task of choosing what they want to buy and send over.

We will keep you posted when we have brought the items and are ready to go.

Maths! Quick Images

In maths we have been starting our lessons with a quick image.

Quick images are shown to you for only 3 seconds. You then need to work out how many objects were on the page.

Can you work out these quick images we made in class?

How did you work out the answer?

What makes a good quick image? What doesn't?

Poppies, poppies, poppies!

As part of our ANZAC inquiry the driving question was: Why Poppies?
This question was asked by one of the children in Room 8. Interesting question and it isn't normally answered.
We did some research, looked at photos and poems! We came to the conclusion that poppies are used for a couple of reasons.

1. Represents blood (red) mourning (black)
2. Poppies grew in the battle fields

Here is some art work we did around Poppies.

Mother's Day

We have been getting ready for Mother's day in Room 8 with some excellent art work.

I hope all of you mothers had a magical day!

Newsletter

This week is meant to be starting to get colder. Please ensure that your child comes to school equipped for the cold weather wearing shoes and a jersey.

Enjoy the week.

Learning conferences

As you may be aware learning conferences are fast approaching. The children are responsible for these and they get to share with their parents what they have been up to along with examples of their work. The children, during reading time, have a Power Point to complete so they are ready to share with you all on the day.

Mufti day

As part of our inquiry topic the children have been learning all about Communities. Throughout this topic they decided that they wanted to give back to Communities of their choice.
So, off set a group of 4 girls to Mr Bremer's office and they asked for a mufti day. Another group emailed the SPCA and asked if they could volunteer. Unfortunately, you have to be over 16 years old to do this so instead the girls thought they would have a pet food collection.
On Friday 1st May, these events took place. Wow! What a great day it was too.
The children in Room 8 have raised $510.00 from mufti day and have 2 boxes full of pet food for the SPCA.
The children want this money to be spent on a school in Vanuatu so we have a catalog and are going to work out what we can buy for a school. We are looking at things like rubbers, books and pencils. Office Max have also got on board and are donating to us dictionaries and atlas.
A parent from a year 5 child has offered to transport any school supplies we purchase to Vanuatu in 2 weeks for us and take photos. This will be fantastic as the children will see where exactly their contribution ends up..

Central Hawkes Bay Trip

On Thursday 30th April, Room 8 went to the CHB Settlers Museum.
The children had a ball! They enjoyed looking at all the olden day exhibitions and thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition on "They answered the call." In this exhibition the children learnt all about families from CHB that went to war and their stories.

Here is some photos from our trip.
