Reading at Duart

For our inquiry topic we have been learning all about Communities. We have learnt about what communities are, why we have communities and the different communities we are a part of. The children then thought it would be a good idea to give back to our community! One way they wished to do this was to read at Duart House. Hunter kindly wrote a email to Duart House and asked if we could go up there and read. The response was immediate! They loved the idea. Our first day reading at Duart was on Wednesday 22nd April. The children started in the lounge and then wove through the rest home reading to anyone they could find. They read to a lady who was 92 years old and doesn't leave her room. They also went up stairs and read to people up there "in big soft reclining chairs!" What an experience! When the children got back to school they were bouncing off the walls with excitement. They loved it and really enjoyed meeting the people there.

Here are some photos of us reading at Duart House..

We also learned all about a nurse at the hospital's family history in the war at Gallipoli.

This was such a great day for everyone involved that we have already scheduled our next visit for Wednesday 20th May.
